1) LEGAL SEMINARS

These seminars review pertinent information concerning the legal system as it pertains to Psychiatry.

A. Basic law for psychiatrists

Seminars will be held every Friday starting in January in room 1055 from 9:00 to 10:00 (except on days of division meetings).

  1. The nature of law, the foundations of law and case law, common law, statutes and administrative regulations
  2. The structure of the federal and state court systems
  3. The use of the law library
  1. Theory and practice of punishment
  2. Basic civil procedure
  3. Basic criminal procedure
  4. Jurisdiction
  5. Mens Rea and Criminal responsibility
  6. Tort law
  7. Due Process and Equal Protection
  8. Legislative Process

B. Landmark Cases in Forensic Psychiatry


Didactic Core Curriculum Seminar

Didactic Core Curriculum lectures will be conducted at Tulane's Department of Psychiatry in the Tidewater Building . The format will be open discussion and/or faculty supervising discussion. Scheduled time will be from 10:00 to 11:00 on Fridays in Room 1055.

Lectures will cover the following topics: Background and Historical Topics , Malingering, Criminal Law, Civil Law, Child Forensic Psychiatry, Legal Regulation of Psychiatry, Neuropsychiatry, Special Issues in Curriculum, and Components Specific to Correctional Psychiatry.

Didactic Seminar prelecture reading assignments are (unless otherwise specified) from Principles and Practice of Forensic Psychiatry , Richard Rosner, editor.
