Each of our clinical and academic settings ( Tulane University Hospital, Medical Center of LA [MCLNO, Charity and University Hospitals], Veterans Administration and Ochsner) offers a different spectrum of patients with neurologic disease, providing residents with a broad and complete exposure to clinical neurology. The following is a guideline for the rotations to be done: PGY II 7 months of inpatient neurology (MCLNO, VA, TMC*) PGY III 6 months of consultation (VA, MCLNO, VA, TMC*, Ochsner) PGY IV 2 months of VA Chief Residents are closely supervised throughout their training. Attending rounds on the ward and consultation services are made on a daily basis. Staff neurologists are present at all clinics to supervise patient evaluations and to teach residents, and to conduct morning report. In general, first year neurology residents take call an average of five times per month, second year residents an average of four times per month, and third year residents an average of three times per month. There is always a senior resident or chief resident on backup call should there be emergencies which require more than one neurologist to be present. Emergency admissions at MCLNO and the VA are primarily up to the clinical judgment of the resident on call, while at Tulane Hospital faculty plays a strong role. Faculty and the chief resident are always available for emergency consultation.
