Essentials of Child Psychiatry

A four week course covering the following topics:
Evaluation and disposition of emergencies in Louisiana, including dangerousness to self and others
Clinical Evaluation of the Child Patient
Clinical Evaluation of the Adolescent
Community Resources

Basic Treatment Skills and Techniques

This 2-year long course consists of seven 12-week modules focused on the major treatment modalities that will become areas of competence for training requirements.
Psychopharmacology (2 modules)
Parenting
CBT and Behavioral Treatments
Adolescent and Group Therapy
Play Therapy
Family Therapy

Grand Rounds

The Department has a weekly Grand Rounds devoted to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry presented by residents, faculty, and local, national, and international scholars presenting their clinical work and/or research programs. All members of the section attend.

Consult-Liaison Rounds

Consult- Liaison Rounds consists of a presentation by fellows and faculty of intriguing cases from the C/L service and a discussion of the fundamentals of consultation to a pediatric service and the elements of successful liaison practice.

Development and Developmental Psychopathology

This 2 year course consists of a 12 month course on landmarks of normative development and the emergence and evolution of psychopathology. The course director is Dr. Charles H. Zeanah, Jr.
In alternate years, a course on the major psychiatric disorders of childhood and adolescence is presented. The course director is Dr. Valerie Wajda Johnston. This 2ed year also includes a block on multiculturalism and a block on ethics.

Clinical Therapy Skills

Residents view videotaped evaluations or therapy sessions and discuss diagnostic and treatment issues. Both general and specific therapeutic interventions are discussed.
Various treatment modalities such as CBT, MET, and play therapy, are included.

Clinical Case Conference

The Clinical Case Conference is an object-relations and family systems focused case conference which integrates theory and practice of psychotherapy.
Once per month an informal presentation and discussion of a challenging treatment case will be given by faculty or residents.
